Why specify a MTU engine
MTU (Rolls-Royce Power Systems) sits at the top of the performance pyramid: high power density, fast load acceptance and best-in-class transient response. Series 1600, 2000 and 4000 engines are specified for mission-critical data centres and offshore installations.
- Outstanding load acceptance (G3 / G4 class)
- Containerised packages up to the top of the range
- Full Stage V compliance with SCR aftertreatment

Both 50 Hz and 60 Hz builds are listed. Model codes carry the standby rating and, where two builds share a rating, a trailing letter.
MTU publishes both continuous and standby ratings to ISO 8528, and the gap between them is narrow. Derate follows the Series 4000 application manual: about 3 % per 100 m of altitude and 1 % per 5 °C above the reference ambient.
Where an MTU set goes
High power density means high heat rejection, so the package matters as much as the engine.
MTU builds are dense, so we treat the enclosure as an engineering problem rather than a finishing option. Series 2000 units up to about 1,200 kVA fit a reinforced acoustic canopy. Series 4000 units almost always go into a container or a purpose-built plant room with a remote radiator, because the charge-air cooling and exhaust volume will not fit a canopy at that rating.

| Typical power range | Up to 4,125 kVA |
|---|---|
| Enclosure | 10 / 20 / 30 / 40 / 45 ft container |
| Ingress protection | IP54 (IP55 optional) |
| Best suited to | Series 4000, 1,500 kVA and above, data centres |

| Typical power range | 10 – 4,125 kVA |
|---|---|
| Enclosure | Galvanised acoustic canopy |
| Ingress protection | IP54 |
| Best suited to | Series 2000 in hospitals, banks and urban standby |

| Typical power range | 10 – 4,125 kVA |
|---|---|
| Enclosure | None — open skid |
| Ingress protection | IP21 (control panel IP54 optional) |
| Best suited to | Marine and plant-room retrofits with remote cooling |
Already running a MTU set?
Series 2000 and 4000 injectors, high-pressure pumps, turbochargers and the ADEC control modules are available to order, with genuine parts carrying MTU documentation.
MTU sets, answered plainly
The three things buyers ask us most about this engine platform.
Power density and parts pricing. You pay for a smaller footprint and a genuine service organisation, and the replacement parts carry a premium that reflects that.
Yes. Series 4000 sets parallel through the MTU or a third-party switchgear, and we supply the droop and load-sharing settings with the commissioning documentation.
Either a container-mounted radiator with adequate louvre area or a remote radiator. We size the louvres against the engine's heat rejection, not against the container size.
