Why specify a Mitsubishi engine
Mitsubishi heavy-duty engines are valued for their low specific fuel consumption, quiet combustion and exceptional tolerance of poor fuel quality. The S-series is a long-standing favourite for mining, marine and standby packages above 1,400 kVA.
- Low fuel consumption at part load
- Tolerant of high-sulphur fuel in remote sites
- Robust for continuous prime-power duty

50 Hz builds are listed. Model codes carry the standby rating and, where two builds share a rating, a trailing letter.
Mitsubishi ratings are stated for continuous and prime duty rather than standby, which is why the numbers look conservative next to European engines of the same displacement. Derate is roughly 2 % per 100 m above sea level and about 1–2 % per 5 °C above 40 °C.
Containerised by default
Above 1,400 kVA the enclosure decision is already made — these engines only make sense as a complete power plant.
Almost every Mitsubishi set we build leaves as a containerised power plant. The S12R and S16R need a walk-in arrangement for the exhaust, the fuel polishing skid and the paralleling switchgear, none of which fits under a canopy. On the rare occasions a customer wants an S6R in a canopy for standby duty we will quote it, but we point out that the engine is designed for continuous operation and is wasted on peaking work.

Mitsubishi sets, answered plainly
The three things buyers ask us most about this engine platform.
Yes, with the HFO package: fuel heater, separator, modified injection system and a lube-oil treatment unit. This is the main reason Mitsubishi sets appear in IPP plants.
Around 197–200 g/kWh on diesel, which is among the lowest in its class. Ask us for the exact figure at your site conditions before comparing quotations.
Yes, and it is the normal specification. We build with 50 °C ambient packages, oversized radiators and dual filters for desert installations.
